The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is an ornithologist's
paradise. Kumarakom is a preferred haven of migratory birds like
the Siberian

stork,
egret, darter, heron and teal. A visit to the bird sanctuary festooned
with the lavish green woods will leave you bewildered as you witness
the multi-hued native kingfishers, egrets, night herons, golden-backed
woodpeckers. You can also relish the acrobatics of the fly-catchers
and bird lovers. Pathiramanal is an exciting island on the Vembanad
Lake. It is accessible only by boat. A cruise along the Vembanad
Lake is the most excellent way to experience the sanctuary. According
to ancient Hindu mythology, a young Brahmin dived into the Vembanad
Lake to perform his evening ablutions. The water made way for the
land to rise from below. This 10 acre island houses many rare birds
like the waterfowl, cuckoo, owl, egret, heron, water duck and alsovthe
migratory Siberian cranes. Parrots, teal, larks, flycatchers, wood
beetle, and other birds are spotted during their particular migratory
seasons.
